What is a Split Space Keyboard?

A split space keyboard refers to a keyboard where the space key is divided into multiple keys.

On a typical keyboard, there is usually a single large space key in the center, but on a split space keyboard, the space key is divided into several parts, allowing you to press the space key with either hand.

Basic Structure and Mechanism of Split Space Keyboards

There are three types of keyboards with split space keys:

  1. Key-split type
  2. Body-split type
  3. Modular type

Let’s compare the advantages and disadvantages of each.

TypeFeaturesAdvantagesDisadvantages
Key-split typeOnly the space key is separatedLess tiring even after long useSlightly more expensive than regular keyboards
Body-split typeThe body itself is split, with space keys on both sidesAllows for natural typing postureHigh initial cost, fewer options
Modular typeKey layout can be freely changedCan build your preferred layout with high flexibilityTakes time to configure, can be very expensive

The most affordable is the key-split type, which is simply a regular keyboard with the space key divided. The cost is only slightly higher than a standard keyboard, making it reasonably priced.

The body-split type, also known as a separate keyboard, actually has a surprisingly large variety. Since the keyboard is split in the middle, the space keys are laid out on both the left and right sides.

In recent years, the modular type has been gaining attention. Magnetic mechanical keyboards are also a kind of modular type. While they allow for a free layout, they are extremely expensive.

Advantages of Split Space Keyboards

Ergonomic Effects Reduce Strain on Wrists and Shoulders

Split space keyboards are designed so that each hand can operate independently. On a regular keyboard, you may need to twist your wrist to press the space key, but with a split space keyboard, this is unnecessary and you can operate the keys with your hands in a natural position.

As a result, you can operate the keys in a natural position without forcing your wrists to move while typing, which can help reduce physical strain, especially on the wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

In addition, some models allow you to customize the layout and functions of the keys, enabling you to change to the optimal layout according to your needs.

Improved Typing Speed

Split space keyboards can reduce unnecessary lateral movement, which can improve typing accuracy and thus increase typing speed. However, if you do not use the space key frequently, you may not see a significant improvement.

Disadvantages of Split Space Keyboards

Requires Getting Used To

Because the space key is split, depending on your typing habits, it may take some time to get used to. If you are used to typing on the left or right side of the space key, there is no problem, but if you tend to type on the edge of the key, you may end up pressing the middle area, so you will need to get accustomed to it.

High Price

Split space keyboards are often more expensive than regular keyboards. In particular, separate keyboards and modular types tend to be high-priced products.

Limited Options

Split space keyboards are still not common in the market, so there are few models and limited places to purchase them. As a result, it may be difficult to try them out before buying.
